Leaders in the world of work

Leaders have followers. Even if you don't have formal authority, you can be a leader. If you schedule a meeting and others show up, then you have followers. Leaders in the world of work have a huge capacity to improve the lives of others. Gallup's 2008 study uncovered the four needs of followers as HOPE, TRUST, COMPASSION, and STABILITY.

Walk the leadership path.
Walk the leadership path.

Leaders need to meet the needs of their followers but need to put their oxygen mask on first by leading from a place of awareness. Understand your motivators, your values, your limitations. Get feedback, learn, learn more. Know (inside of you) the value you bring as a leader.

Then lead others. Create opportunities for your team to connect on the purpose of the business. The more direct line of sight on the value each of them bring, the more power you have as a team. And, when conflict starts, dive in. Candidly and compassionately. Show how to surface dilemmas and tackle them as a team.

If you are living right now, then your business is operating in a time of uncertainty. A counterweight to uncertainty is purpose. Demonstrate your continued focus on the purpose of your business. Get rid of things that are blocking your way. Don't listen to the noise...only the aspects that will make a difference. AND talk to your team. Keep them in the loop. Share what you can and be clear about what you don't know.

Finally (although most consultants start with this), a vision gives you and your people a path to walk on and absorb the stress.
